Once the clocks go back in October the living room needs covering by five in the afternoon. The book in hand is the 28-page one about window covering, running to the end of the year, sorted first by style into Natural Living, vtwonen, Bohemian and Retro Chic, then by type into curtains, blinds and pleated shades. The cover also offers an advice visit at home.

Pay attention to how it quotes: made-to-measure window covering is quoted per opening, so the amount saved multiplies by the number of windows. Every made-to-measure item prints two figures side by side: blackout roller blind 28211 in brique texture shows 107,21 against a member figure of 80,41, aluminium venetian 28402 in brushed metal 182,52 against 136,89, light-filtering double pleated shade 28659 in taupe 85,54 against 64,16, and transparent double pleated shade 28676 in green 229,75 against 172,31. All four land on exactly three quarters, the same 25 per cent. The fabric pages give reference numbers instead: blackout roller 28204 in beige and brown, roman blind 2891 Stan in light-filtering linen, curtain fabrics 2852 Britta amber and 2923 Maggy sand both partly dimming and partly recycled, and vertical louvres 22705 in brown texture.

The catalogue sorts window covering into three types that block light very differently:

• Rollers and roman blinds, the tier that takes least space. Blackout roller 28211 at 80,41 for members rolls away into a few centimetres above the frame, which suits a kitchen or a small bedroom. The 2891 Stan linen roman blind filters light instead, keeping daylight while blocking the view in, which is what a ground-floor front window needs in the older Dutch streets where the sill sits almost on the pavement.
• Venetians and vertical louvres, the tier that aims light rather than stopping it. Aluminium venetian 28402 in brushed metal is 136,89 for members, and its slats tilt so daylight lands on the ceiling instead of a screen, which is more useful in a room you work from than full blackout. Vertical louvre 22705 in brown texture suits a full-height window or a sliding door, because it draws to one side rather than rolling upward.
• Pleated shades, the tier that holds heat best. Light-filtering double pleated shade 28659 in taupe is 64,16 for members and the transparent double 28676 in green is 172,31. The honeycomb section is hollow, which adds a layer of still air between the glass and the room, so a seat by the window feels noticeably less cold once winter arrives. The gain is largest in an older house with single glazing.

The sum is the quote per window times 0,75 times the number of windows at home. The figures printed here are quotes for example sizes, and your own openings need measuring before there is a real number. The ratio, though, is fixed. Say two windows in the living room, two in a bedroom and one in the kitchen, all at the 28211 level: five at the shelf figure is 536,05, five at the member figure is 402,05, a difference of 134,00. Multiply by the windows you actually have and then decide whether this trip justifies the card. Made-to-measure cannot be returned, so order the free colour samples first and look at them in your own light, because shop lighting and a north-facing living room are two different things.

The cover prints a start date of 14 September, three days before the window recorded here, and the recorded window governs. The member figure needs a Club Karwei account, nothing is printed about the time from measuring to fitting or about installation charges, no branch stock is given, and example prices move with size and fabric.
