Nothing you hang on that empty living-room wall looks right, and you start thinking about changing the whole surface. The book in hand is the 24-page one about walls, running to the end of the year, with paint, wall panels and wallpaper split across the cover and a contents list that adds padded wall cushions, felt panels, colour combinations, the vtwonen collection, lower-impact paint and three favourite shades.

Before starting, lay the two routes side by side: one wall can be a handful of rolls or a single made-to-measure mural, and the gap between them is close to tenfold. The three highlighted lines cover papering, panelling and the glue that holds the second one up:

• Vtwonen vliesbehang double stripes warm grey at € 28,79. Non-woven paper is the kind where paste goes on the wall and the sheet goes straight onto it, which one person can manage alone, and it comes away in whole lengths later without leaving a backing behind. A fine vertical stripe in warm grey lifts the apparent ceiling a little, which suits the older Dutch living room with big windows and a modest height.
• Silentlines Lattenwand montagekit 290 ml at € 8,99. Slatted wall panels look good, but what decides whether they stay up is this tube: 290 ml of the mounting kit made for that panel system. When budgeting, do not count only the panels, because how many tubes a wall takes depends on the number of slats, and being one short means stopping work for another trip.
• Met Club Karwei Vliesbehang Geo crème at € 24,79. This geometric cream (pattern 120957) is 30,99 on the shelf and 24,79 with the card, exactly a fifth less. Cream with a geometric figure is the least demanding pattern to live with, so when a wall needs texture rather than attention it is a safer choice than a dark shade or a large print.

The sum is wall height times width divided by the coverage printed on the roll, rounded up. A wall 2,6 metres high and 4 metres wide is 10,4 square metres. The coverage of one roll is on its own label, so divide 10,4 by that figure, round up, and multiply by the price per roll. If the answer is three rolls of Geo cream, that is 3 times 24,79, or 74,37, against 149 for the same wall as a made-to-measure mural. When the gap is under double, the mural often wins, because it arrives seamless and no figure gets cut across a join. When it is wider, take the rolls. Buy one spare roll from the same batch either way, since a later top-up may come from a different run.

The cover prints a start date of 14 September, three days before the window recorded here, and the recorded window governs. The card price needs a Club Karwei account, nothing is printed about paste, priming or labour, and there is no branch stock or made-to-measure lead time anywhere in the book.
