Three years after moving in, the scratches on the living-room floor have joined into one patch. The book in hand is the 28-page one about floors, running to the end of the year, with a contents list covering the Theo-Bert Pot collection, new doormats, cut-to-size vinyl and carpet, the vtwonen collection, a top three of floors and stair renovation.

Read into it and one thing is worth settling first: for the same room, roll goods and click planks can differ by more than three times per square metre. Click PVC Primo at 4 mm with a 4V bevel holds 1,76 square metres per pack at 29,98 on the shelf and 14,99 with the card, which is about 8,52 a square metre, while roll vinyl in a four-metre width is 2,29. Both end up as one continuous floor. The difference is that planks go down a row at a time and a damaged one can be swapped, while roll goods have to be cut right once, leave almost no seams and are awkward to patch.

The three highlighted lines represent three different ways of covering a floor:

• Vloerkleed Voghera at € 156,75. A rug is the only option here that changes a whole room without touching the floor already down, and it moves house with you. For a tenancy where the floor cannot be altered, or a living room where only the sofa corner needs warming, this beats relaying a surface. Size it so the front legs of the furniture stand on it, or the room reads as cut in half.
• Vinyl vloer Elara Mira 4 meter at € 2,29. Roll goods in a four-metre width are the cheapest covering per square metre in the book, and four metres means most rooms take one continuous piece with no seam down the middle, which suits a rented home or a room that will change again before long. The cut has to be right first time, so measure the recesses at the doorway along with everything else.
• Vloeren assortiment. This block points at the floor range as a whole, including the two newer cut-to-size services for vinyl and carpet. If your room is not a clean rectangle, or a hallway and a staircase have to carry the same pattern, cutting to size wastes less than buying a full roll and trimming it yourself, which makes measuring the sensible first step.

The sum is room area times the square-metre price plus about a tenth for cutting waste. Take a 20 square metre living room: roll vinyl is 20 times 2,29, or 45,80, and click planks are 20 times 8,52, or 170,40. Add roughly a tenth for cutting waste on each and you land near 50 against 187. Put your own length and width into it and the three-fold gap becomes a specific amount for your room. If that gap does not even buy a rug you like, the choice matters less than it looks and you may as well pick on feel underfoot.
