The Zeeman week 36 flyer, 5 to 11 September: 18 pages and the only window that opens on a Saturday

Eighteen pages, opening on Saturday 5 September and closing on Friday 11 September. That starting point is a minority position in Dutch retail: of the fifteen chains scanned today, only Zeeman turns over on a Saturday.

The sum is short: take the day you plan to go out and subtract 5 September, and you have which day of this flyer you are standing in. Saturday is day one; the following Friday is day seven and the last. If the same trip includes a supermarket, run the same subtraction against that chain's opening day. The two numbers are usually different, and which shop to enter first, and when, follows from whichever flyer is still in its early days.

Textiles and clothing are not fresh food; a few days later nothing spoils. Sizes and colours running out is real, though. So these eighteen pages are worth reading in blocks rather than cover to cover. In the first week after school starts, what actually gets used tends to be three blocks: the socks and underwear a child gets through daily, the extra layer the morning-to-evening swing needs, and the bedding and towels the season change calls for. Reading for each block separately shows the gap faster than turning eighteen pages.

Hokimi field note: Dutch children's sizes are labelled in centimetres of height, not in years, so measuring the child before you leave beats reading the flyer. A 122 on the size chart means 122 centimetres, not roughly seven years old.
