The ALDI three-day flyer, 4 to 6 September: 22 pages running alongside its own week folder

Twenty-two pages over three days: Friday 4, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September. What makes this one unusual is not the page count but the fact that it is valid at the same time as ALDI's own week folder dated 31 August to 6 September. Two windows lie on top of each other in the same shop this weekend, and both of them close on Sunday.

A three-day window and a seven-day window mean entirely different things for a shopping trip, and the sum is one division: the time and distance this trip costs you, divided by the days the window has left. On a seven-day window you can wait for the day it falls on your route. On a three-day one, skipping Friday leaves two days, and one of those is a Sunday with shorter opening hours. Read the other way: if one of these three days is a day you were going out anyway, this flyer costs you nothing.

If the weekend is being eaten at home, it is worth settling three blocks before turning a page: what Friday evening actually needs cooking, the ingredients for whatever gets made with the children on Saturday morning, and what goes in a pocket for the Sunday walk. Anything outside those three can wait for the next window, since Monday starts a fresh ALDI week regardless.

When two pack sizes of the same thing sit side by side it is far more use than the large-print figure. One division tells you whether the big pack really is cheaper.
