The rainy-day fallback: Pathe Gold costs 9 euro more a month, and three IMAX visits win it back

When the Dutch weather splits a weekend in half, the cinema is the easiest fallback, and the reason has nothing to do with price: films for adult audiences here keep their original soundtrack and carry Dutch subtitles rather than being dubbed, so someone with no Dutch walks in and hears the language the film was made in. Only children's titles need care, because the same film is scheduled twice, once dubbed into Dutch and once in the original, listed as two separate entries. Book the wrong one and you sit through two hours of Dutch. The four monthly tiers cost 9,95, 23,00, 32,00 and 32,00 euro, and what separates them is not whether you get in but which auditoriums cost extra once you are.

• Explorer is 9,95 a month for one standard 2D visit, and an unused month rolls over into the next. (source 1)

Two sums settle it, and both are short. The first decides whether to subscribe at all: divide 23,00 by what a single ticket costs at the cinema you actually use, and you have the number of visits a month at which the subscription breaks even. If that number is higher than the number of times you genuinely go, Explorer at 9,95 sits closer to your real use and its unused months carry forward. The second decides which tier: Gold costs 9,00 more each month, so divide that 9,00 by the surcharge of the format you keep choosing and you get how many visits it takes to win it back. IMAX or Dolby Cinema is three, 4DX is two, Dolby Atmos is nine and 3D is six.

The food discount is often offered as the reason, but it cannot carry that 9,00 on its own. The gap between the tiers is twenty-five per cent against ten, fifteen percentage points, so recovering 9,00 through the counter alone means spending 60 euro a month inside the cinema. Both tiers also come with a monthly code for the home rental service, four films at 2,99 each, though that applies only to rentals normally priced up to 5,99 and never to purchases or new releases.

Hokimi field note: before taking children, find the same title twice in the schedule. The entry with the original version marked after the name is the one that spares you the dubbing.
