What you need to know

On a weekday evening in October you cycle home with stiff fingers, and nobody wants to stand at the hob stirring a pan of soup. The Philips Viva HR2203/80 is a soup maker: chopped vegetables and stock go into a stainless steel jug, you pick a programme, and it heats and blends on its own, in 18 minutes or less according to Philips. One jug holds 1.2 litres, which Philips counts as four portions, so 300 ml a bowl; bol.com sells it itself for EUR 87.64, rated 4.7 from 384 reviews, 306 of them five stars.

Philips kitchen appliances are now made by DAP B.V., registered in Drachten in Friesland, and this machine belongs to the Viva range. The idea is to put cooking and blending in one jug: the base heats while a Z-shaped blade hangs from the lid, and Philips credits that blade together with a tuned heating profile for reaching the right texture within 18 minutes. The five presets are smooth soup, chunky soup, compote, smoothie and manual blending, so at the weekend the same machine can turn soft apples into a jar of compote. The trade-off is in the specification: the jug contains the heating element, is not dishwasher safe and has to be washed by hand.

When you want to cook several days of lunches on a Sunday afternoon, the limit is obvious: one jug is only 1.2 litres, a family of four finishes it in one meal, and batch freezing means two rounds. More important, the bol specification says plainly that it is not suitable for plant milk, so anyone hoping to make soy milk should look at a soy milk maker with a filter instead. You can work out whether it pays: the cost of one home-made bowl is (ingredients plus 0.30 kWh times your price per kWh) divided by 4, where 0.30 kWh is the ceiling of 1000 W running flat out for 18 minutes and real use is lower. Then divide 87.64 by how much more a ready-made portion costs than your own bowl, and you get the number of bowls to break even: at EUR 2 a bowl that is 44 bowls, or 11 jugs.

  • How the machines on the same page compare: per litre of capacity this one is 87.64 / 1.2, about EUR 73 a litre; the DOMO DO705BL holds 2 litres for EUR 65.30, about EUR 33 a litre, rated 4.5 from 290 reviews and better value for a bigger household; the KitchenBrothers 1.2 litre model is EUR 54.99, rated 4.5 from 119; the Moulinex Easy Soup LM841B10 is also 1.2 litres at EUR 84.99, rated 4.6 from 130. Of the four, the Philips has the most reviews and the highest score. (source 1)
  • A second price reference: the official Philips web shop lists a recommended price of EUR 109.99 but itself sells the machine for EUR 87.64, the same as bol, so this is the normal selling price rather than a bol-only deal. (source 2)
  • Check before ordering: the page promises next-day delivery, 30-day returns and the legal warranty through bol, with a two-year manufacturer warranty; the power cord is only 1 metre, so measure first if the counter is far from a socket. (source 1)

Hokimi field note: if you plan to freeze portions, buy 300 ml containers, because one jug fills exactly four; for eight portions cook two rounds rather than doubling the ingredients in one jug. The jug cannot go in the dishwasher, so rinse the blade with water while it is still warm, which is far easier than scrubbing it once it has cooled.
