Panasonic SD-YR2550 bread maker at EUR 216.89: load it at night, a loaf of up to 1.1 kg by morning on the 13-hour timer

At seven on a weekday morning you want a slice of white bread baked at home before you leave. Panasonic Netherlands says the SD-YR2550 can be filled the night before and set on a timer of up to 13 hours so the loaf is ready in the morning; in the Dutch manual the basic white bread programme takes 4 hours to 4 hours 5 minutes, and the largest XL loaf uses 600 g of strong bread flour, 400 ml of water and 40 g of butter. On bol it costs EUR 216.89, rated 4.7 from 125 reviews, 109 of them five stars; the EUR 249 on the page is a recommended retail price, so this is not a discount.

Panasonic says it was the first brand in the world to sell bread makers, and it has made them since 1987. This model uses two temperature sensors to read the air inside and outside the machine and adjusts each step to the room; dry yeast goes into its own dispenser and drops into the dough at the right moment, raisins or nuts go into a second dispenser that holds up to 150 g, and the kneading blade works against ribs in the pan to imitate kneading by hand. Four of the 31 programmes are gluten-free, for bread, cake, pasta and pizza dough.

On a weekend when you want a wholemeal or gluten-free loaf for the family, what it saves is the kneading and the hours of watching the dough rise, not necessarily money. Loaves to break even = 216.89 / (price of the loaf you usually buy - your ingredients for one loaf): an AH Tijger wit heel costs EUR 1.99, so if your ingredients come to EUR 1 a loaf, that is 216.89 / 0.99 = about 219 loaves, more than two years at two loaves a week. The manual adds two limits: use strong bread flour, not soft flour, and leave milk out when you use the timer, because it can spoil.
