Mohard front and rear bike light set, 28,99 euro: six of its eleven modes are not legal lighting here

Amazon.nl lists the set at 28,99 euro today, front and rear together, in stock, carrying the Amazon's Choice badge with a 4.7 rating from 799 reviews. The specification page is specific: the front unit peaks at 2000 lumens on a 3000 mAh battery, running four hours at full brightness and twelve at low; the rear runs on 350 mAh for anything between five and fifty hours depending on mode. Both are IP65 in aluminium housings with Type-C fast charging, and the front carries a numeric display reading zero to one hundred per cent. From September the Dutch evening starts going dark early, which is when lights like these sell hardest.

What this page is really about is not brightness but modes. Mohard's own images print them out one cell at a time. The front has four: high at four hours, medium at six, low at twelve, and a burst flash at six reached by double-clicking. The rear has seven, of which high at five hours and low at nine burn steadily while the remaining five are slow flashing, warning flashing, fast flashing, alternating slow flash and alternating warning flash. Of the eleven settings you are paying for, six of them flash.

The Dutch rule on this is blunt. A lamp fixed to the bike may not flash, and neither may a loose lamp; the front must be white or yellow and the rear red, both aimed straight ahead and straight back rather than into anyone's eyes. A loose lamp may be worn on clothing, on a bag or on the upper body, front or back, but not on the head, the arms or the legs. Whether the 28,99 euro is worth it comes down to a short sum. From 2026 the fine for not carrying correct bicycle lighting is 75 euro, and the wording is not carrying correct lighting rather than not carrying any, so being stopped on a flashing mode costs the same as riding with nothing at all. Seventy-five divided by 28,99 is roughly 2,6, meaning one fine pays for two and a half sets. Then run the battery: the 3000 mAh front unit holds twelve hours on low, so divide that by the minutes you actually ride each day and you know your charging interval.
