Kunstmuseum lets children decide how to enter an exhibition

Many children enter a museum hearing “do not touch” before they see anything. Doe-eiland reverses that order: they move, construct, draw and browse first, then meet an exhibition through the materials in their hands. Its theme changes with the museum programme, so this is not a static toy corner but a practical bridge between free play and looking closely. The island is not childcare. A caregiver must supervise, books and materials stay there, and families tidy together. Free use also cannot promise an empty table or the same materials at every visit. Hokimi would not make a complete gallery round the price of admission. Let the child choose one action on the island, then look for a matching colour, shape or story in the museum; play becomes a way of seeing rather than a reward afterwards.

• It opens Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–17:00; Monday is closed.
