Kasteel Hoensbroek, forty rooms and a dungeon for EUR 12.95: the two sellers draw the adult line five years apart

An autumn-break day that still works in the rain is hard to find, and in the south of Limburg there is a stone castle built around its own moat: more than forty rooms furnished as they were, a route that runs from the cellars up to the watchtower, and seven centuries of people who lived in it. Kasteel Hoensbroek is rated 4.3 from 59 reviews on Tiqets and costs EUR 12.95 for an adult; it won the Dutch Kidsproof award in 2023 and was voted the loveliest castle in the Netherlands by ANWB readers in 2022.

What you come for is not the outside wall. Inside there is a route that walks from the Middle Ages into the eighteenth century: vaulted cellars, narrow spiral stairs, halls hung with family portraits and halberds, bedrooms with canopy beds, and finally the tower with its circle of water and meadow below. Children from four collect a free Discover-the-Castle booklet and hunt for the pieces of a knight's kit as they go; the castle also runs virtueelkasteel.nl, a 360-degree walkthrough you can do at home first so a child arrives already knowing the way. The castle is operated by Historisch Goud and ticketed by the municipality of Heerlen.

The sum worth doing is about age, because the two sellers draw the line between child and adult five years apart. On Tiqets an adult starts at 13 and costs EUR 12.95, with EUR 9.75 for ages 4 to 12. The castle's own shop counts an adult from 18: EUR 15 at the desk and EUR 10.50 for ages 4 to 17, with 10% off in its own web shop except on event days, which makes EUR 13.50 and EUR 9.45; there is also a family card at EUR 42.50 for two adults and two children aged 4 to 17, and under-fours go free either way. So the method is to sort your party twice, once against each age line, and total both. Two adults with a 15-year-old and an 8-year-old come to EUR 48.60 on Tiqets, EUR 45.90 through the castle web shop and EUR 42.50 on the family card. Two adults on their own come to EUR 25.90 on Tiqets against EUR 27.00 in the web shop and EUR 30.00 at the desk, and the Tiqets ticket already includes the tour booklet that costs EUR 2 extra at the desk. Holders of the Dutch museum card pay nothing either way.

• 17 and 18 October are the castle's knight festival and those two dates are absent from the Tiqets calendar; they are also the first weekend of the autumn break in region Zuid, where Limburg sits. The official dates are 10 to 18 October for region Noord and 17 to 25 October for Midden and Zuid, and the ministry publishes them as advisory dates that a school may shift. • By car it is simple: set the navigation to Juliana Bernhardlaan in Hoensbroek and you arrive at the free car park in front of the castle, entering over the first footbridge; on event days a parking charge is possible. The castle is about 25 km from Maastricht and from Aachen and 12 km from Valkenburg, has a lift and is largely wheelchair accessible, and dogs other than assistance dogs get no further than the first courtyard. Hokimi field note: the tightest stretches are spiral stone stairs and a pushchair will not go up them, so a toddler is easier in a carrier; there is a lift, but it does not reach the tower.
