What you need to know
An indoor rink in the Netherlands is open for barely half the year, and not every rink opens on the same day. The Elfstedenhal in Leeuwarden publishes its full 2026-2027 tariff on its own site, which makes it one of the few family outings you can cost out before the season even starts. It sits at Fryslanplein 1, 8914 BZ Leeuwarden, with a 400-metre oval plus a 30 by 60 centre rink, and parking is free. Free-skating admission comes in two bands: EUR 7.50 up to and including 17, and EUR 10.50 from 18, with group rates of EUR 6.50 and EUR 9.50 for parties of eleven or more.
Start with the line most people forget, which is the skates. Standard skates with a helmet are EUR 7.50, Easy Gliders for beginners are EUR 5.00, and a helmet on its own is EUR 2.50. So a child's first visit does not cost EUR 7.50, it costs 7.50 plus 7.50, or EUR 15.00: the rental matches the ticket exactly and doubles the price. The only way to remove that half is to own skates, and whether that is worth it depends entirely on how often you will go.
- Free-skating admission: EUR 7.50 up to 17, EUR 10.50 from 18; groups of eleven or more pay EUR 6.50 and EUR 9.50. (source 1)
- Eleven-visit cards: EUR 70.00 up to 17 and EUR 105.00 from 18. (source 1)
- Season cards: youth unlimited EUR 150.00; adult Basis up to 27 visits EUR 212.50, Comfort up to 54 visits EUR 255.00, Premium unlimited EUR 345.00. (source 1)
- Rental: standard skates including a helmet EUR 7.50, Easy Gliders EUR 5.00, helmet alone EUR 2.50. (source 1)
The three adult season cards deserve to be set side by side, because they are not a simple better-costs-more ladder: they put a price on visits. Basis works out at 212.50 over 27, or EUR 7.87 a visit. Comfort is 255.00 over 54, or EUR 4.72. Comfort costs only EUR 42.50 more than Basis, so it is a fifth dearer for double the visits, and above 27 visits Basis has no reason to exist. The unlimited Premium only beats Comfort at roughly 345.00 divided by 4.72, about 73 visits, which across a season of some six months means going three times a week.
On the youth side the line is simpler. The season card at EUR 150.00 divided by the EUR 7.50 single is 20 visits, so it only starts saving from the twentieth. The eleven-visit card works out at 70.00 over eleven, EUR 6.36 a visit, which is EUR 1.14 under the door price. A family going five or six times in a season should buy the eleven-visit card; one going more than twenty should buy the season card; one going once or twice is better off with singles plus rental. Write down how many times your household will realistically go this winter and the answer picks itself.
