IKEA desk sale ends today: measure before buying

The final day of a discount encourages people to choose colour before space. This IKEA Family promotion offers 15% off desks and 20% off desk and clamp lamps through 10 August. The expensive mistake, however, is not missing the percentage. It is bringing home a desk that blocks a door or a lamp whose beam never reaches the keyboard and face. The headline rate is only an entrance. A desk has to solve width, depth, chair movement, sockets, screen distance and transport. A lamp has to solve direction, shadow, clamp thickness and cable length. Desks marked “New Lower Price” are excluded from the 15% promotion, while stock, delivery fees and online-versus-store availability can change the final bill.

“Buy today to save” therefore makes sense only after the room has been measured. Paying delivery to capture a lamp discount, or replacing furniture that still works merely to collect 15%, creates a saving on one checkout line rather than in the household. Treating the work area as one system is more valuable than putting two discounted objects into the basket separately.

• Measure four figures: usable width, desktop depth, chair clearance and distance to the nearest socket. Mark the footprint with tape.
• Sign in first: the offer is for IKEA Family members. Confirm the account, eligible item and actual checkout reduction.
• Read the exclusion: “New Lower Price” desks do not receive the 15%; different sizes within one family can have different status.
• Add delivery and return friction: a large parcel, stairs, lifts and repacking can erase the apparent saving.

Practical takeaway: if dimensions, chair and sockets are settled, the last day can be a useful trigger. If they are guesses, save the model instead. Losing a discount is cheaper than building a workspace that obstructs you every day.
