Hunebedcentrum Borger science weekend on 3 and 4 October: 15.50 euro for adults, free with a Museumkaart, and a 30 euro friends card

The largest hunebed in the Netherlands stands in Borger, Drenthe, and the Hunebedcentrum beside it holds a science weekend on 3 and 4 October, 11:00 to 17:00: some 5,000 years ago people moved stones of thousands of kilos to build tombs that still stand, and the weekend uses demonstrations, find identification, children's activities, talks and workshops to show how science works out what they ate, where they lived and how they got by. Admission is 15.50 euro for adults, 8 for ages four to eleven, free under four, and free with a Museumkaart. It suits families with primary-school children and card holders looking for a museum outside the Randstad. Next step: decide on an annual card, then choose the 3rd or 4th. (source 1, source 2)

• Why it is worth it: hunebeds are Neolithic collective graves, and the one in Borger is the largest in the country; besides the museum the centre has the Oertijdpark with reconstructed prehistoric houses, where old crafts are demonstrated outdoors. • Who it suits: the event page tags it as a children's event, demonstrations, talks and workshops; under-fours are free and a CJP card pays 12 euro. The centre also sells the Museumkaart at the desk: 75 euro for adults, 39 for ages 13 to 18 and 39 for 12 and under. (source 1, source 2)
• Before you go: the Hunebedcentrum has its own friends' annual card for 30 euro that gives free entry, and a junior archaeologists' club (JAC) for ages four to eleven at 10 euro a year; the page lists JAC under annual cards but does not say whether it includes free entry, so ask first. (source 2)

Work it out: one visit = adults x 15.50 + ages 4-11 x 8 euro, so 47 euro for two adults and two children. If you will return for the Oerweekend two weeks later, the 30 euro friends' card divided by 15.50 is about 1.9, so it pays off on the second visit (31 euro as two single tickets). The Museumkaart is a different question: at 75 euro an adult needs five visits here alone, so it depends on how many other museums you visit; the 39 euro children's card equals five child tickets here and is not worth it for this museum only.
