What you need to know

On Saturday 5 September, twenty-three venues in Amsterdam are playing at the same time, from Frascati on the Nes to the Treehouse at NDSM, and a half-hour piece leaves you time to catch the next one. This is not one big stage with one big show. It is a pile of pieces, most of them under forty-five minutes, stacked into the same day, so the sum that matters is not the ticket price but how many you can sit through.

  • The festival runs 3 to 13 September, and the programme page filters by date, venue, genre and language across twenty-three listed venues. (source 1)
  • Single tickets come in three tiers set by running time: 10 euro under 30 minutes, 13.50 euro for 30 to 45 minutes, 15.50 euro over 45 minutes. (source 2)
  • Day passes: 31 euro on a weekday, 41 euro on a weekend day, up to seven shows on that day, one ticket per show. (source 2)
  • The weekend pass is 70 euro, covers both days of one weekend and allows up to ten shows. (source 2)
  • Tickets are sold online only and are non-refundable; rebooking is possible only more than 24 hours before the booked performance. (source 2)
  • The language filter offers English, Language No Problem and English Subtitles, and each show page states its own language. (source 1)

Divide the pass price by the single-ticket tier you actually intend to pick and you have the number of shows that day has to hold. The 41-euro weekend day pass divided by 15.50 euro is 2.6, so the third long show is where it turns cheaper. Divided by 13.50 euro it is 3.04, so you need a fourth. Divided by 10 euro it is 4.1, so you need five. The weekday pass at 31 euro divided by 15.50 euro lands on exactly 2, which makes the third long show free. The pattern runs against instinct: a pass rewards long pieces, and the cheaper the short work you pick, the more venues you have to reach for it to pay.

If you are going both days, run the comparison once more. The weekend pass at 70 euro against two weekend day passes at 82 euro is 12 euro less, and the ceiling changes from seven shows per day to ten across two days. If one of those days only holds three shows for you, the pass quietly hands the spare capacity to the other day.

If you do not speak Dutch, the first filter to use is not price but language. In the programme's Language column, English means performed in English, Language No Problem means the piece does not depend on spoken text at all, which covers mime, circus and dance, and English Subtitles means a Dutch performance with English surtitles. Tick those three, then read the timetable. What remains is the part of the festival you can actually sit down in.

Hokimi field note: latecomers are not admitted and sold-out shows have no waiting list, so once you plan three or more in a day, count the travel between venues. The twenty-three addresses spread across the centre, the north and the west; the cluster on the Nes is walkable, the two at NDSM need the ferry.
