Venice Museums Pass at EUR 50 for the Doge's Palace and eleven civic museums: subtract the ticket you were buying anyway

Venice in November is quieter and wetter, which is exactly the season for stringing museums together instead of queueing in the sun. Most people arrive at St Mark's Square, buy one ticket into the Doge's Palace, and never notice that the city sells its civic museums as several different bundles at very different prices. It is supplied by Societa Cooperativa Culture and reaches well beyond St Mark's Square. Alongside fast-track entry to the Doge's Palace it includes the linked route through the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum and the Biblioteca Marciana, then Ca' Rezzonico, Ca' Pesaro, Palazzo Mocenigo, the Fortuny Museum, Carlo Goldoni's house and the Natural History Museum, and out in the lagoon the Glass Museum on Murano and the Lace Museum on Burano. The real shape of this ticket is therefore not the Doge's Palace with extras attached: it is a line drawn from the Grand Canal palaces out to two island craft museums.

What deserves calculating is whether it saves you anything. The official visitmuve.it site splits the same institutions into separate tickets: the St Mark's Square Museums ticket, which is the Doge's Palace with Correr, Archaeological and Marciana, is EUR 35.00, or EUR 30.00 booked online at least thirty days ahead; the Museums of 18th Century Venice, the Museums of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Island Museums are EUR 20.00 each. The official pass itself is EUR 50.00, EUR 25.00 reduced, valid six months from purchase, one admission per museum, no reservation required. Copy this line and substitute your own plan: pass price minus the ticket you were going to buy anyway = the headroom left, divided by the price of the next bundle you actually want = how many more bundles you must use before it pays. Put the numbers in: 50 minus 35 is 15, and 15 divided by 20 is 0.75, so using one whole extra bundle turns EUR 55.00 of content into EUR 50.00 and puts you EUR 5.00 ahead; two bundles is EUR 75.00 of content and EUR 25.00 ahead. But if you booked the St Mark's ticket thirty days out at EUR 30.00, then 30 plus 20 is exactly 50, and anyone visiting only one extra bundle saves nothing at all.

• Build the route backwards from the opening hours: the Doge's Palace runs 09:00 to 19:00 from 1 April to 31 October with last admission at 18:00, and 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 November to 31 March with last admission at 17:00, and closing procedures start thirty minutes before.
