Venice has no metro, so public transport means the water buses. This ACTV pass starts at EUR 12.00 across six durations, and whether it pays turns on one number: how many rides your trip involves. Count them, then compare.

What you need to know

Flying from Amsterdam to Venice, the first thing to solve on landing is not what to see but how to move. The city has no metro, public transport means the water buses, and the fare arithmetic does not work the way it does in a city on land.

ACTV runs public transport in Venice and this ticket is issued by Venezia Unica, covering the historic centre, the Lido, the lagoon islands and the land buses in Mestre and Marghera. It is not an attraction ticket, it is a transport ticket, and the only reason to buy one is to spend less. Whether it does that turns on a number only you know: how many boat rides this trip will actually involve.

What costs people money here is not the fare, it is assuming the pass covers everything. Anything pointing at the airport is outside it: transfers to and from Marco Polo, the Alilaguna boats, lines 16, 19 and 21, and the Casino line all have to be bought separately. For anyone flying in from the Netherlands, the first and last legs of the trip are usually exactly that airport leg.

  • There are six durations, from 75 minutes to seven days: 75 minutes, one, two, three, four and seven days, starting at EUR 12.00. The shortest is a single-journey option, and once the window closes you buy again.
  • If the airport connection is genuinely needed, the same listing carries a separate version that includes it, starting at EUR 13.00. The two are easy to mix up, so check which one is in the basket.
  • The cancellation policy is that it cannot be cancelled. Do not buy before the itinerary is settled, and read that line before you read the price.

One field note: count the boat rides in your plan before anything else. Piazzale Roma to the apartment is one, Murano and Burano out and back is two, the ride home in the evening is another. Then take the single-journey fare from the official fare page on the day you buy, multiply it by that count, and set the result against the pass. If the singles come out cheaper, buy singles. A ticketing page will not count those rides for you, because counting does not always end in a sale.
