The autumn TheFork Festival runs from 3 October to 26 November: around Rotterdam's Oude Haven, Stockholm, Matelief, Kade4 and Bartendy take part, with 50% off the food only in the slots marked in each TheFork agenda and only when booked through TheFork.
What you need to know
A proper dinner in Rotterdam after work on Friday, without wincing at the bill: that is the situation the autumn TheFork Festival is built for. From 3 October to 26 November, participating restaurants take 50% off the food in marked time slots. Around the Oude Haven, across from the Markthal, four places are on TheFork's list: Stockholm, Matelief, Kade4 and Bartendy. Stockholm has by far the most reviews, 1,465 of them averaging 9.0, and sits opposite the Witte Huis, Europe's first skyscraper. The discount is on the food (op het eten), so drinks stay at full price, and the smartest way to order is to split the bill into two columns before you choose. Next step: pick a date on TheFork, look for slots marked -50% and book.
- How the four compare: TheFork's average prices are EUR 25 at Matelief (9.2 from 422 reviews), EUR 28 at Kade4 (8.8 from 186), EUR 30 at Bartendy (9.4, but from only 7 reviews, too small a sample) and EUR 31 at Stockholm (9.0 from 1,465). For seafood or a big cut of meat, Stockholm is the one: its menu lists a whole sole at EUR 47.50 and a cote de boeuf at EUR 85, which come to EUR 23.75 and EUR 42.50 at half price.
- Work out your own bill: you pay (food total at menu price x 0.5) + (drinks at full price). Two people sharing a whole sole and a cote de boeuf have EUR 132.50 of food, so EUR 66.25 in a festival slot, plus whatever drinks you order. The more you drink, the smaller the share of the total that the half price actually touches.
- Compare first when you are a group: Stockholm has two permanent group menus on TheFork, at EUR 42.50 and EUR 44.50 per guest. The festival discount cannot be combined with other promotions, so a table has to choose between the set menu and half-price a la carte food. Halve the menu price of the main course each person wants; if that comes in under EUR 42.50, ordering a la carte is the better deal.
- Check before you go: the discount only applies on the day and time the restaurant's TheFork agenda shows it, and only when you reserve through TheFork; phoning or walking in does not count. Not every slot carries the discount, and weekend dinners tend to fill first, so look at the agenda early.
