A donation-based Hengelo trail asks children to assess plants and animals instead of calling nature simply cute or scary.

What you need to know

“Watch out!” may stop a child, but it does not necessarily teach what to decide next. The Pas op!-Pad created by IVN Hengelo in Heemtuin Weusthag turns a warning into ten separate acts of judgement. Different “danger moments” appear along the route: can this plant be touched, will that animal actually attack, should the child move away, or is the risk smaller than it first appears? At every sign, participants observe before deciding whether the danger is genuine. By the finish they have identified ten situations without reducing nature to pretty flowers, friendly animals or a place that is frightening everywhere.

Children’s safety education often substitutes prohibition for explanation, yet outdoor conditions change and memorised rules are not enough. IVN lets children aged four to twelve practise a reusable sequence: notice evidence, estimate risk, choose an action. The same habit can help later with ticks, thorny plants or a startled animal. The trail runs through the Heemtuin and Beleefbos on every Sunday afternoon in August. No registration is required and there is no fixed admission fee; a voluntary donation is appreciated. It is a low-cost neighbourhood outing with unusually practical risk literacy.

  • Open on Sundays 9, 16, 23 and 30 August from 13:00 to 16:00.
  • Primarily for children aged 4-12, with ten potential nature hazards to identify.
  • No registration and no fixed ticket price; the organiser welcomes a voluntary donation.
  • Address: Van Alphenstraat 15A, 7556 JT Hengelo, behind the ice rink and Combibaan.

Hokimi field note: adults should resist giving the answer first. Ask “what evidence can you see?” and discuss the choice together. Wear long trousers and closed shoes, perform a tick check at home and look at IVN’s update before travelling in bad weather.
