What you need to know

The difficult part of choosing a sport for a child is not a shortage of options; it is the lack of a real trial before committing to a season. On the morning of 23 August, Festival De Plek opens several specialist spaces at Flik-Flak in ’s-Hertogenbosch so children aged one to fifteen can discover which movement feels right. Young visitors dance with nijntje, watch puppets and climb. Older children move among volleyball, taekwondo, judo, fencing, acrobatics, street dance, trampoline and gymnastics. The goal is not winning but spending forty-five minutes feeling teamwork, rhythm, balance or courage from inside the activity.

Flik-Flak is an established gymnastics and sports centre, so this is not a handful of temporary games on a lawn. Children enter a dojo, dance studio, gym or fencing hall and encounter real equipment and basic technique under instructor supervision. The organiser says everyone is welcome, not only club members, while many workshops require a free reserved time ticket. “Kinderfestival” had little measurable interest in the NL Trends comparison, so this choice received no trend boost. It earns its place through low cost, unusually dense programming and clearly defined age groups.

  • Sunday 23 August, with the main children’s programme concentrated between 09:30 and 12:30.
  • Ages 1-5 get nijntje dance, puppets, a meeting moment and movement play; ages 6-14 can choose sports workshops.
  • Open to all families, not just members; many activities are free but require a timed reservation.
  • Address: Marathonloop 7, 5235 AA ’s-Hertogenbosch; food such as the pancake package is charged separately.

Hokimi field note: choose one first-choice activity and one backup for the child’s age, leaving time to change halls. Bring sportswear and water. During tumbling, trampoline or martial arts sessions, follow the instructor and avoid moves that have not been demonstrated.
