Early Music Festival asks who gets a voice

“Early music” can sound like the simple replay of old scores, but Utrecht’s 2026 Festival Oude Muziek asks a deeper question through Giving Voice: how can an instrument speak like a person, how do parts become equal or hierarchical inside polyphony, and whose voices survive only indirectly in the archive? The theme begins with French Baroque composer Marin Marais’s Les voix humaines, then reaches Gregorian monody, troubadour song, court airs and semi-operas by John Blow and Henry Purcell.
