Two municipal pools publish 2026 tariffs that look nothing alike. Rijssen-Holten sells an A+B package at 560,20 euro with the diploma exam included; Woerden sells a six-lesson card at 102 euro, plus 38,40 euro registration and 49,65 euro for the diploma. The…

What you need to know

Anyone enrolling a child in Dutch swimming lessons will misread the first price list they see, because different pools are not selling the same thing. The municipal pool De Koerbelt in Rijssen-Holten sells packages: diplomas A and B together cost 560,20 euro, diploma C costs 160,20 euro, registration is 25 euro but is offset against the A+B package once the child starts, and the page states plainly that no extra cost is added for the diploma session itself. WoerdenSport is built the other way round: a six-lesson card for A, B or C costs 102 euro, a one-off registration fee of 38,40 euro applies only if you are not already on the waiting list or in lessons, the diploma including a medal costs 49,65 euro, and a swim card costs 2,50 euro with the first one free.

Put 560,20 next to 102 and the second looks like a price from another country, but the two measure different things: one buys a whole diploma, the other buys six times in the water. Dividing 102 by six gives 17 euro a lesson, which is at least a comparable unit, yet a per-lesson price still settles nothing while the number of lessons is unknown. So there is only one question worth asking the pool: how many lessons does an average child here need to reach diploma A. Multiply that answer by 17 euro, add the 38,40 registration and the 49,65 diploma fee, and you finally have a figure that can sit beside 560,20. There is also a timing trap that catches non-Dutch parents: Rijssen-Holten states its waiting list runs to roughly a year, so registering has to happen well before the child is ready.

  • Convert both sides into a price per diploma: card price divided by lessons per card, multiplied by the pool's average lesson count, plus registration and diploma fees
  • On the phone ask one thing: how many lessons does an average child here need for diploma A. Without that number no unit price can be compared
  • Check whether the registration fee is refunded or offset: the 25 euro in Rijssen-Holten comes off the package, while Woerden's 38,40 euro is charged separately
  • With a waiting list of about a year, register by counting backwards from your child's age rather than waiting until they seem ready

Hokimi field note: on a low household income, ask about Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur first; the Rijssen-Holten page states that with its support the A+B contribution drops to 146,50 euro and diploma C is fully covered. Package prices, the offset registration fee and the waiting time are at source 1; the lesson card, registration and diploma fees are at source 2.
