Maximum 2026 tariffs: a passport is EUR 88.65 for adults and EUR 67.05 under 18, an identity card EUR 80.10 and EUR 43.20. Documents issued at 18 or over last ten years and those issued under 18 five, so divide before comparing: adults pay EUR 8.87 against EU…

What you need to know

The Dutch 2026 document tariff has only four numbers: a passport costs EUR 88.65 for adults and EUR 67.05 for under-18s, an identity card EUR 80.10 and EUR 43.20. Most people read that table and conclude the ID card is the cheap one, but the four figures cannot be compared side by side, because the validity differs: a document applied for at 18 or over lasts ten years, one applied for under 18 lasts five. What you compare is the cost per year. For adults, 88.65 divided by 10 is EUR 8.87 a year and 80.10 divided by 10 is EUR 8.01, a gap of 86 cents a year and EUR 8.55 across the whole decade. For an adult, in other words, passport or ID card is barely a money question at all.

  • Maximum 2026 tariffs: a Dutch passport is EUR 88.65 at 18 or over and EUR 67.05 under 18; a Dutch identity card is EUR 80.10 and EUR 43.20. (source 1)
  • These are maximum tariffs. Your own municipality sets the exact amount and it may be lower. (source 1)
  • Validity: a document applied for under 18 is valid for five years, one applied for at 18 or over for ten. (source 1)
  • Neither document can be renewed; every time you apply for a new one and pay the full amount again, and residents without Dutch nationality apply for a passport at their own country's embassy. (source 1)

For children the answer inverts. 67.05 divided by 5 is EUR 13.41 a year, 43.20 divided by 5 is EUR 8.64, a difference of EUR 4.77 a year, more than five times the adult gap. The cause is not the price but the term: a child document lasts only five years, so the dearer one is spread far harder. Put your own family into it: will that child leave the EU once in the next five years? If yes it has to be a passport; if not, there is no reason to pay EUR 4.77 a year for one. A separate government page lists which countries a Dutch identity card is accepted in, and it is worth reading before booking.

The third number is the one most people miss: the table publishes maximum tariffs, and how much you actually pay is set by the municipality you live in. So look up those four figures on your own municipality's site before applying, subtract its amount from the table's, and that difference is what you actually save. And one point matters most if you are new here: these four prices apply to Dutch nationals. If you live in the Netherlands on another nationality, your passport comes from your own country's embassy, and your Dutch residence document is not on this table at all.

Price
Passport EUR 88.65 or EUR 67.05, identity card EUR 80.10 or EUR 43.20, all maximum tariffs
Ages
Whether you are 18 on the day you apply sets both the price and the number of years
Booking
Arranged by each municipality; most require an appointment online first
Note
Neither document can be renewed, so each application is a full new fee, and residents without Dutch nationality apply at their own embassy

Hokimi field note: look at the expiry date on the document you already hold and then count backwards. Airlines and border checks commonly want three to six months of validity left on arrival, so the real deadline usually falls earlier than the date printed on the card.
