What you need to know

Autumn on the Veluwe is one of the few places in the Netherlands where forest, heathland and drifting sand sit next to each other, with red deer, wild boar and mouflon inside the same fence. The park receives almost no government subsidy, so entry is paid, and the price structure decides which ticket makes sense for you: €13.85 for anyone 13 and over, €6.95 for children aged 6 to 12, free under 6. An annual card is €81.05 for an adult and €43.65 for a child. Divide the annual card by the single ticket and €81.05 ÷ €13.85 is about 5.85, so it is the sixth visit in a year that makes the annual card cheaper. The ten-visit strippenkaart is sold as ten visits for the price of nine at €124.65 for an adult, which works out at roughly a tenth off and has to be used within one calendar year.

  • Put your own number of visits in: two or three trips a year and single tickets win; six or more and the annual card is the cheaper route; at exactly ten visits the strippenkaart saves about ten per cent, which may not be worth paying €124.65 up front.
  • The car is not included: bringing a car, camper, motorbike or horse carriage into the park costs €9.80, and parking outside the entrances is €4.90. An annual card that includes a vehicle is €143.35. Two adults driving in for one day therefore pay €13.85 × 2 + €9.80 = €37.50.
  • The part people get wrong: a Museumkaart does not cover park entry, so a cardholding adult still pays €13.85 and a child aged 6 to 12 still pays €6.95. ICOM and Rembrandt cards do give free entry, and only while the museum inside the park is open. The park entrances and two tea houses take card payment only, no cash.
  • You can get there without a car: bus 106 runs from Ede to the centre of the park and stops at the Otterlo entrance, and you can buy a park ticket on the bus itself. The three entrances are Otterlo (Houtkampweg 9), Hoenderloo (Houtkampweg 13) and Schaarsbergen (Koningsweg 17); the park says Otterlo is the busiest and recommends the other two.

Hokimi field note: decide first whether a sixth visit this year is realistic, then choose the ticket. If you simply want one autumn day out to look for deer, a single ticket plus the 106 bus is enough and you do not need to tie up the annual card money.
