Choose one listening lens before filling the autumn with film and music classes

The risk at the start of a new season is not a lack of interest but too much of it. Film, jazz, rock and classical music appear together, and enthusiasm can fill a diary before practical timing is considered. Volksuniversiteit Rotterdam’s “Focus op Film en Muziek” offers different depths from 16 September. A ninety-minute morning lecture on Odysseus is listed at €23; a six-session film-history course begins that evening for €131; and an eight-session jazz course starts on 8 October for €160, with later topics including Pink Floyd and Queen. Hokimi recommends first deciding what you want to change: understanding one work more closely, or building a historical framework across weeks. The value is not adding more famous names to a schedule. It is acquiring one viewing or listening lens that can be used the next time a film scene, composition or performance asks for deeper attention.
