Verpact reports that 129 million euro of deposit money was never reclaimed last year. This year's forecast puts bottle collection at 77 to 81 percent and cans at 85 to 89 percent, against a legal requirement of 90 percent that has not been met once since 2021…

What you need to know

The Dutch deposit system is printed on the packaging, but people who arrived recently often know only that a machine stands near the supermarket entrance, without knowing what each item is worth. Verpact states it plainly: small plastic bottles and cans carry 15 cent of deposit, and large plastic bottles from one litre carry 25 cent. This is not a discount and not an environmental reward. It is money already paid at the till, and dropping the empty into ordinary waste is simply abandoning it. The scale is visible in one figure: according to Verpact, 129 million euro of deposit money went unreclaimed last year. That is not an abstract environmental number but cash that consumers paid and then left behind.

The regulatory line is equally clear. Producers and importers have been legally obliged since 2021 to collect and recycle 90 percent of all plastic bottles and cans. The forecast for this year puts bottles between 77 and 81 percent and cans between 85 and 89 percent; last year the counter stood at 78 percent for bottles and 86 percent for cans. The numbers move, but the 90 percent line has never once been reached since the scheme started. After the environment and transport inspectorate threatened penalty payments, Verpact introduced an extra reward scheme this year and expects to place 5,400 additional collection points before 1 January 2027. For anyone living here the actionable part is short: those 5,400 points are not there yet, so the thing to fix now is your own household number.

  • Count a single week: cans and small bottles multiplied by 0,15 euro, bottles of a litre or more by 0,25 euro, then multiply the total by 52 for what you give up in a year
  • Only cans carrying the special barcode and the deposit logo qualify, so an identical drink bought abroad cannot be returned and should not be counted in
  • Keep the return bag by the front door rather than in the kitchen; what decides whether this money comes back is usually convenience on the way out, not conviction
  • Machines being full or out of order is common, and the receipt itself has an expiry, so redeem it in the same supermarket or convert it to cash while it is valid

Hokimi field note: this is not a saving tip, it is reclaiming money you already paid. The two deposit rates are at source 1; this year's collection forecast, the 90 percent legal norm and the 129 million euro figure are reported at source 2.
